After Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, New York Liberty star, Breanna Stewart, and her wife, Marta Xargay, began receiving homophobic emails.
Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty have been battling against the Minnesota Lynx for the 2024 WNBA Championship. After Game 1, the Liberty encountered a close loss with a final score of 95-93. Stewart had a chance to tie the game, but missed a free throw and layup towards the end of the game.
It was after this game that Stewart’s wife, Marta Xargay, received threatening homophobic emails. She proceeded to file a complaint with the police, who has a taskforce investigating the harassment.
Stewart commented, “We love that people are engaged in our sport, but not to the point where there’s threats or harassment or homophobic comments being made.”
CBS News reports that several WNBA players have faced harassment on social media. In response, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert made a statement before the Finals commenced. She emphasized the importance of being a voice against such behavior, stating, “…We must continue to speak out against it, condemn it, and seize every opportunity to support our players…”
As the investigation continues, Stewart continues to dominate during the Finals as the New York Liberty have advanced to a 2-1 record against the Minnesota Lynx.
