For the first time, the mother of Romeca Meeks-Blackmon, a 31-year-old woman fatally shot in Chicago’s South Loop, is speaking publicly about her loss.

Chicago police confirmed that the individual taken into custody following Monday’s shooting has since been released without charges.
Standing with her family, Meeks-Blackmon’s mother, McMiller, expressed the deep heartbreak of losing her daughter to gun violence. She remembered her as a devoted mother, a loving daughter, and a caring friend. Meeks-Blackmon was studying to become a nurse, determined to create a better future for herself and her loved ones.
Now, McMiller is stepping in to raise her daughter’s six-year-old son.
Investigators report that the tragedy occurred shortly after Meeks-Blackmon dropped her son off at school near Cermak Road and State Street. Police state that she became involved in a confrontation with another individual, who then pulled out a gun and shot her in the face. She was quickly taken to Stroger Hospital but unfortunately did not survive.
