Cook County is expanding its approach to maternal and child health with a new initiative that brings care directly into the homes of new parents, according to ABC Chicago. Through a program of home check-ins, public health workers are now visiting families during the early stages of parenthood to provide guidance, resources, and support.
These home visits are offered through the Cook County Public Health Departmentās Healthy Beginnings Maternal and Child Health Program. Launched this year, the initiative aims to lower maternal and infant mortality rates while encouraging healthier outcomes for children and families by providing support to mothers in the comfort of their own homes. The program is designed to reach families during a critical period when access to care, education, and emotional support can make a lasting difference.
During these visits, trained health professionals check on both mother and baby, answer questions about recovery and newborn care, and connect families with services such as breastfeeding support, nutrition assistance, and mental health resources. The goal is not only medical care, but also building trust and ensuring parents do not feel alone during the transition into parenthood.
Officials say the initiative is especially important in communities where health disparities and limited access to care have contributed to higher risks for mothers and infants. By meeting families where they are, Cook County hopes to close those gaps and strengthen long-term health outcomes.
The program is voluntary and tailored to each familyās needs, offering a personalized approach rather than a one-size-fits-all model. Health leaders believe this kind of early intervention can help prevent complications, reduce emergency visits, and support stronger family development from the start.
As the program grows, Cook County Public Health hopes more families will take advantage of these in-home visits, marking a shift toward more accessible and community-centered care.
