A security guard’s death following a Baddies USA event in San Francisco raises a difficult question: when conflict becomes entertainment, what responsibility comes with the platform? Zeus Network has issued a statement, but what should happen next?

THE WORD
Ulysses Tykee Davis, 47, died after the October 3 shooting near the Warfield Theatre.
Police arrested Shakia Vanderbilt on October 6; prosecutors announced murder charges October 7.
Zeus expressed condolences, condemned the violence and said neither person was affiliated with the network.
Investigators have not established that Baddies influenced the alleged crime.
San Francisco police responded to the 900 block of Market Street around 1 a.m. October 3, finding a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided aid before paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he died.
The Warfield had hosted an event connected to Zeus Network’s Baddies USA. Davis, known as “Bear,” was a security guard and father of six. His brother-in-law, Terrance Cooper, told Mission Local that Davis’ wife and two children were at the theater when he was shot.
Prosecutors charged Vanderbilt with murder, discharging a firearm at an occupied building and four counts of firearm possession by a felon, alongside firearm allegations. The investigation remains active. Vanderbilt is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Officials described a disruption inside the venue before Vanderbilt was brought outside and a dispute followed, according to Mission Local. Authorities were still determining whether Davis was targeted. Bartenders also described a chemical irritant being sprayed inside before the shooting, prompting attendees to rush toward exits.

In its statement, Zeus extended condolences to Davis’ loved ones and condemned the violence. The network said the shooting happened outside the theater after the event ended. It also said neither Davis nor the person charged was affiliated with Zeus, specifying that the accused was not an employee or cast member. Nonetheless, Davis was shot while working at the Warfield Theatre as security for Baddies USA.
While Zeus’s statement was prompt, it still leaves a lingering thought on how the network ensures proper safety at their events. The network’s continued fame and growth is built on glamorized “fight nights.” Baddies features verbal and physical confrontations, while Zeus’s promotional descriptions emphasize drama.
Whether viewers favor cancellation or reform, condolences should open a conversation about accountability. Davis’ family deserves compassion, and workers and attendees deserve meaningful protection before another event takes place.
Conversation Question: Is Zeus’s statement enough, or should Zeus face cancellation?
