On May 20, 2023, in Indianola, Mississippi, 11-year-old Aderrien Murry was shot in the chest by Sergeant Greg Capers of the Indianola Police Department. The incident occurred after Murry’s mother, Nakala Murry, directed him to call 911 due to the arrival of an irate ex-partner at their home. When police responded to the domestic disturbance call, Sgt. Capers shot Murry as he was entering the living room from a hallway, unarmed. Murry sustained serious injuries, including a collapsed lung, a lacerated liver, and fractured ribs.

Murray suffered from a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and lacerated liver. He was initially placed on a ventilator but has since recovered. Aderrien’s mother, Nakala Murry, has filed a $5,000,000 lawsuit against the police department and has called for the officers firing.

Officer Capers was initially suspended without pay. On December 21, the Indianola Board of Aldermen reinstated him to his job. No criminal charges were filed against him. Thoughts?
