This past weekend Mary J. Blige, in collaboration with Pepsi, brought her third annual Strength of a Woman Summit to New York City. An add-on to the singer’s highly anticipated “Strength of a Woman Festival“. The day-long summit provided an experience that not only celebrated women but created sisterhood. With star-studded panel discussions featuring Taraji P. Henson, Method Man, Tasha Smith, Misa Hilton and Pinky Cole to name a few. Setting the vibes was a line-up of New York City’s favorite Dj’s including Hot97’s Funkmaster Flex.

A welcoming atmosphere, the ambiance was that of a woman’s touch. Detailed with beautiful flower arrangements and purple color schemes. Throughout the venue were various brand activations giving free services to the 4,000 people in attendance. Haircare brand “Mielle” provided a rejuvenating hair station as well as gift bags. “Get Gem’d” serviced attendees with free Swarovski tooth gems. In addition, there was a build your own bouquet area called “Bloom Bar” as well as activations from Verizon and Pepsi. Providing space for Black Women owned food businesses, establishments such as famed “Slutty Vegan”, Harlem’s, “Melbas”, “2 Girls and a Cook Shop”, “Aunts ET Uncles” and “Je T’aime Patisserie” all set up shop.
Although a celebration for all women, the woman of the hour was Mary J. Blige herself. Celebrating the true strength of a woman, Mary’s essence was felt throughout the venue. An activation dedicated to the 30-year anniversary of her sophomore album “My Life”, had many fans reminiscing down memory lane. The activation had an area for photo-ops as well as a listening booth. “Mary’s Living Room” allowed attendees the opportunity to indulge in wine provided by “Sun Goddess Wine” and featured jewelry from “Sister’s Love Jewelry Designs”.

The intention behind sisterhood couldn’t have been more prevalent throughout the summit. A moment for Black Women and Women of Color to come together. Sharing wisdom and providing a space to be themselves. Amongst the many activations were panels that featured industry powerhouses. Delving into conversations surrounded by Black Women in corporate America and the many struggles’ women face as entrepreneurs.

Sisterhood gleamed from the stage during a chat between Mary J. Blige and her longtime besties, Angie Martinez, Tasha Smith, and Taraji P. Henson. A conversation entitled “Girl Talk with MJB” featured a candid conversation moderated by Angie Martinez. The ladies spoke on friendship, their careers, and the importance of faith. A moment filled with laughter, tears and wisdom left attendees with a sense of strength and love.

The summit much like the rest of the weekend long festival left an everlasting impression on the city of New York. Providing the city with a sense of pride and a true testament to Mary J. Blige’s commitment to uplifting women in the Urban Community. For more information on Strength of a Woman Festival log onto www.soawfestival.com
