A cultural moment bridging art, fashion, and film lands in Chicago with a tribute to a Black creative legend.
Chicago showed up heavy for EXPO weekend as Just Don and Creative Control set the tone with their “WHO IS ERNIE BARNES?” pop-up—an immersive tribute honoring the legacy of Ernie Barnes.

A LEGEND REINTRODUCED
Held inside the Just Don store in Fulton Market, the event was more than just a pop-up. It was a full cultural experience blending storytelling, fashion, and Black artistic excellence.
For those who may not know, Ernie Barnes is the visionary behind the iconic Sugar Shack painting, famously featured in the classic Chicago-based sitcom Good Times. His work has long captured the rhythm, movement, and soul of Black life, and this activation brought that energy back to the forefront.
The pop-up also serves as an early look into an upcoming documentary directed by Coodie and Chike, set for release in 2028, that will dive deeper into Barnes’ life and impact.
DON C BRINGS THE VISION TO LIFE
Chicago’s own Don C stepped in with a signature collection inspired by both the film and Barnes’ legacy, bridging fashion with fine art in a way only the city knows how to do.
The weekend also featured a director’s talk with Coodie and Chike, moderated by Ghetto Runway podcast host Dane Marcus, giving attendees insight into the storytelling behind the upcoming film.
THE CITY PULLED UP
If you know Chicago, you know the creatives came outside for this one.
Notable names in attendance included George of the legendary George’s Music Room, artist Pugs Atomz, Chance The Rapper, celebrity stylist Brandy Penelope, Taylor Bennett, painter Lonnie Edwards, painter Jeff K%NZ, Ghetto Runway’s Zo, PHLI Dave Jeff, Ticara Davone, GLC, and more.
From music to fashion to fine art, the energy felt like a real intersection of Chicago’s creative ecosystem.
