After an exhilarating few weeks of basketball in Unrivaled’s inaugural season in Miami, Florida, Angel Reese has been celebrated as the league’s first Defensive Player of the Year.
The Chicago Sky power forward received this prestigious honor after achieving the highest combined weighted votes from Unrivaled players and coaches, alongside a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, as highlighted in a press release to The Blast. Reese, representing Rose BC in Unrivaled, dominated the league in rebounds, averaging an impressive 12.1 per game, and led her team in blocked shots. “Reese was the cornerstone throughout the season for the top-scoring defense in Unrivaled, allowing only 65.2 points per game,” the release proudly stated.
This DPOY accolade follows her recognition on the Second Team All-Unrivaled, joining the ranks of fellow WNBA stars Skylar Diggins-Smith and Rhyne Howard. Her teammate Chelsea Gray aptly described Reese as a “double-double machine,” shining a light on her incredible work ethic and determination.
As Reese and other prominent WNBA athletes embrace the off-season league, Unrivaled has captured the attention of star players and major brands alike. NBA legend Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors’ involvement as an investor sets the stage for establishing a “new standard” for female athletes.
Unrivaled partnerships with major brands, including Samsung Galaxy, Sephora, TNT Sports, Under Armour, Ally Financial, Miller Lite, Ticketmaster, BODYARMOR, and others, further exemplify the bright future ahead and the power of unwavering dedication in sports.
