FIRST-DEGREE MURDER CHARGE FILED IN KILLING OF ROMECA BLACKMON OUTSIDE SON’S SCHOOL

A Morning Drop-Off Turns Tragic

A woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 31-year-old Romeca Blackmon, who was killed on the morning of September 8, 2025, just moments after dropping off her son at school in Chicago’s South Loop. According to FOX 32 Chicago, Blackmon kissed her son goodbye, told him to have a great day, and walked outside — where a fight broke out between her and another woman.

Police scanner audio captured someone reporting a woman armed with a gun shortly before shots were fired. Blackmon was struck in the face and later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, as documented by CBS Chicago.

A Delay That Sparked Public Outrage

Despite being detained at the scene, Quadajah “Holly” Johnson was released shortly afterward, a decision that shocked many. Prosecutors said there was initially “insufficient evidence” to file charges, according to FOX 32 Chicago.

This triggered months of frustration and protest from Blackmon’s family, who repeatedly asked why the alleged shooter was allowed to walk free after a killing that happened in broad daylight outside an elementary school.

Adding to their concerns, FOX 32 Chicago also reported that Johnson had filed multiple protective orders against Blackmon dating back to December 2024 and as recently as the summer of 2025. The family believes these filings were used to create a misleading legal trail painting Blackmon as the aggressor.

Complicating matters further, both women shared children with the same man, who was present at the scene, according to FOX 32 Chicago.

Johnson Arrested Months Later

After months of investigation, authorities announced a major development: Johnson was arrested on December 4, 2025, at her home in Des Plaines and charged with first-degree murder. The arrest and charges were confirmed by FOX 32 Chicago.

During her court appearance, dozens of supporters — many wearing pink in Blackmon’s honor — filled the room. Blackmon’s mother spoke emotionally, telling FOX 32 Chicago:

“I just want justice for my daughter.”

Johnson, who is reportedly pregnant, was ordered held in custody and is scheduled to return to court later this month.

Why This Case Resonates Across the City

A Community Still Grieving, Still Fighting for Justice

Now that Johnson has been charged, Blackmon’s family says they finally feel a sense of movement toward justice. But the healing process is far from over. This case has become a stark reminder of how quickly domestic and co-parenting conflicts can lead to fatal outcomes — and how slow the justice system can move, even in cases witnessed in broad daylight.

As the case moves forward, Chicago residents and advocates hope it sparks deeper conversations about conflict prevention, protection for vulnerable families, and the importance of accountability when violence destroys a child’s world.
