A student walkout in Aurora turned tense Monday after video showed a police officer kneeling on a person during a protest against federal immigration enforcement.
According to NBC Chicago, an estimated 1,500 students from multiple Aurora schools left class to demonstrate against ICE activity in the area. Police say the protest began peacefully but escalated when students moved into roadways, creating safety concerns.
Video circulating online appears to show an officer kneeling on a person’s back while others were being restrained nearby. Aurora police said the clip reflects only part of a nearly two-hour incident.
Three male juvenile students from East Aurora High School were arrested and charged with offenses including resisting or obstructing an officer. One student also faces an aggravated battery charge. Police reported that one officer was injured.
The incident has sparked debate in the community over protest rights and police response.
