M.E.H | CHICAGO ARTISTS TO WATCH RECAP

m.e.h. is a queer, Baltimore-bred, Chicago-based artist with a genre-bending and powerhouse vocal style like no other. m.e.h.’s debut album “It’s All Starting to Make Sense Now,” introduces a story that is raw, moving, and beautifully unguarded. The record blends notes of R&B, jazz and neo-soul that feels both timeless and defiantly her own. Across the seven songs, m.e.h. explores longing, love, grief, and self-reflection with fearless emotional clarity. The album was delicately written and expressively performed with genre-bending production, purposeful songwriting and explosive vocals. Her first single released from the album, “You Got Me Like,” is featured on Season 4 of ‘The Bear.’ Her catalog has been shared across R&B Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds, and Pollen.

Q&A WITH M.E.H. (May 2025)

  • So when you started your music journey, where was your confidence level?
    • It was not what it is now. I was a lot more timid and unsure of myself.
  • Who was your biggest inspiration while growing up?
    • Probably my mom. She’s such a hard worker, and her grit inspired me to go even harder.
  • Did you ever want to give up in the process?
    • Yes. I actually came to Chicago to go to school for music and almost quit. One of my professors, who was Prince’s keyboardist, was mad at me and refused to let me switch my major. If she hadn’t pushed me, I probably wouldn’t be here today.
  • What would you say is something you need to work on as an artist?
    • Becoming a better producer and musician, especially with instruments. There’s always room to improve.
  • At what point did you decide to take your music career seriously?
    • In 2022.
  • Where do you see yourself in the future?
    • Touring the world, winning Grammys, and maybe composing something for an orchestra.
  • Are you seeking to secure a record deal or would you like to remain independent and why?
    • I’d love to remain independent as long as possible. If I were to sign with a record label, it would have to be worth my while.
  • What was the process of creating your last project?
    • A lot of experimenting and trial and error with my collaborator, Matt Sterling. We tried a bunch of ideas and weird stuff in the studio.
  • What are your favorite visuals that you’ve created and why do you like them?
    • My most recent music video, Ghost in My Bedroom. Dylan, who is amazing, uses mixed media like yarn, paper, and tape to create animated visuals. I love it.
  • What is the highlighting moment in your career that encourages you to do music?
    • Performing at Lollapalooza last year. At the time, I had a lot of imposter syndrome, but performing there made me realize I belong and shouldn’t stop.
  • Do you write your own music?
    • Yes.
  • Do you think that it’s beneficial for artists to use a ghostwriter?
    • I’m not the right person to answer that. For me, I’ll always write my own music, but I think it can be a slippery slope if you rely on ghostwriters.
  • Would you be interested in collaborating, and if so, who would it be?
    • Yes! I’d love to work with producers like The Alchemist, Yusef Days, Tom Meesh, and artists like Raven Lanae.
  • Are there any specific Chicago artists that you would like to work with?
    • Shawnee Dez and Fem Dot.
  • What is your favorite thing about being an artist?
    • I love being able to express myself without bounds and learning something new about myself and creating every day.
  • What’s an exclusive fun fact about you?
    • When I was 15, I sang the national anthem on ABC News for the inauguration of the capital of Maryland.
  • What is your guilty pleasure?
    • Playing video games. I have four different consoles.
  • What never fails to make you smile?
    • Family. My girlfriend fills my cup with love, and that’s what we all need.
