CHICAGO POLICE RESPOND TO LARGE ‘TEEN TAKEOVER” AT 57TH STREET BEACH

Chicago police responded yesterday to reports of a large gathering of teenagers near 57th Street on Chicago’s South Side, as officers worked to manage crowd activity and maintain public safety, according to WGN News and video footage circulating from the scene.

In the video, at least two people appear to have been detained by officers. The footage also shows two Chicago police officers assisting another officer, who may have been injured, away from the area as the situation unfolded. Authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of any injuries.

The gathering is being described by some community members as part of a wider “teen trend” or “teen takeover” activity, where large groups of young people organize meetups through social media. These events have drawn increased attention from law enforcement due to concerns over crowd control, traffic disruption, and occasional violence or disorder.

This incident marked the second reported “teen takeover” in Chicago over the holiday weekend. In the early hours of Sunday morning, five Chicago police officers were struck by a vehicle while attempting to disperse a large gathering on the Near West Side, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for both officers and the public during these events.

Separately, tensions across parts of the city remained high following multiple violent incidents. Three people were shot Monday night in Hyde Park on Chicago’s South Side, just blocks away from where another reported gathering took place near 57th Street Beach. Police have not said whether the shooting incidents were connected to the gatherings.

In a related case, Chicago police reported that three men—two 19-year-olds and an 18-year-old—were shot outside a large gathering around 10 p.m. in the 1600 block of East 55th Street. Two victims were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, while the third transported himself. All three were listed in good condition.

Officials continue to investigate the incidents and are urging parents and community members to remain aware of youth gatherings organized online. Police say they are reviewing multiple scenes and video evidence as they assess whether additional measures are needed to prevent further large, unsupervised crowd events across the city.
