18-year-old Ricardo Hernandez Navarrete, a senior at Mather High School on Chicago’s North Side, attended graduation just days after being released from federal immigration detention in Kentucky. Ricardo and his mother were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in March during a routine asylum-related check-in. According to supporters, the family had been actively following legal procedures connected to their immigration case before being taken into custody.
