Chicago city leaders gathered Monday to reaffirm their support for the city’s Department of Gun Violence Prevention following a violent weekend that left multiple people shot across several neighborhoods, according to CBS Chicago.

The announcement comes as city officials continue searching for solutions to reduce gun violence and improve public safety during the busy summer months, when shootings historically increase throughout the city.

During a press conference, elected officials and community leaders emphasized the importance of investing in violence prevention strategies that focus on intervention, outreach, and support services for individuals and communities most affected by gun violence. Leaders highlighted the Department of Gun Violence Prevention’s role in coordinating resources, supporting community organizations, and developing programs aimed at preventing conflicts before they escalate into violence.

Officials acknowledged the pain felt by families and neighborhoods impacted by the weekend’s shootings and stressed that addressing gun violence requires a comprehensive approach involving law enforcement, community organizations, schools, faith leaders, and residents.

The Department of Gun Violence Prevention was created to address the root causes of violence through public health and community-based strategies. Supporters say the department has helped strengthen partnerships between city agencies and local organizations working directly in neighborhoods affected by violence.

City leaders also called for continued funding and resources to expand violence prevention initiatives, arguing that long-term investments are necessary to create safer communities. They noted that while arrests and enforcement remain important, prevention efforts are equally critical in reducing shootings and saving lives.

They encouraged Chicagoans to take part in local violence prevention efforts and to support programs designed to create safer neighborhoods throughout the city.
