Chicago’s grown-ups are being called back to school—but this is one detention they may actually enjoy.
On Thursday, July 23, Free Lunch Academy will partner with This That & The Third’s #3Thursday to present DETENTION: The After Work FUNdraiser Experience. Taking place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Blake’s Backyard, the interactive event will transform a traditional school schedule into an evening of food, music, networking, creativity and community impact.
The adult-edition class schedule begins with lunch at 5 p.m., followed by recess, arts and crafts featuring a live art exhibit, an ’80s babies-inspired Technology Lab and a Physical Education session that organizers promise will not leave attendees sweating. The night will conclude with a mandatory School-Wide Assembly beginning at 8 p.m.
A $9.99 FLA Hall Pass provides guests with access to the full experience, including good food, great music and an opportunity to connect with other professionals and community members.
Beyond the nostalgia and entertainment, DETENTION will help support a larger mission. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Free Lunch Academy and its work to use bullying-prevention practices to develop character in classrooms, careers and communities—one student at a time.
The organization’s programming focuses on youth creativity, enrichment, leadership and community-centered learning. Through its partnership with This That & The Third, the fundraiser gives Chicago adults an opportunity to unwind after work while investing directly in the next generation.

Class is officially in session, and this time, being sent to detention comes with good food, better connections and a chance to make a difference.
