According to authorities, Philip Robinson, 32, was being processed into the Cook County Department of Corrections when officers allegedly found a 9mm Taurus handgun concealed on his person. Officials said the firearm was loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition, including one round in the chamber.

The discovery immediately prompted an investigation, and Robinson was charged with bringing contraband into a penal institution, along with any other applicable firearm-related offenses. Authorities have not released additional details about how the weapon allegedly made it into the jail intake area or whether anyone else may have been involved.

The Cook County Department of Corrections conducts multiple security screenings on every incoming detainee to prevent weapons, drugs, and other prohibited items from entering the facility. Officials say those searches are critical to protecting correctional officers, jail staff, and individuals housed inside the jail.

A loaded firearm entering a correctional facility poses a significant safety risk, making thorough intake procedures an essential part of jail operations. The incident is expected to be reviewed as investigators work to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the discovery.

Robinson’s latest charge is separate from the reason for his initial arrest. As with all criminal cases, the allegations against him are accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to release additional information as the case proceeds through the criminal justice system.
