Chicago showed up for Lil Durk as the Grammy-winning rapper’s highly anticipated federal murder-for-hire trial officially got underway in Los Angeles.

The beginning of Lil Durk’s trial brought more than attorneys, jurors and national media to downtown Los Angeles. A visible group of supporters connected to Chicago’s music scene also gathered around the courthouse as one of the biggest legal cases involving a Chicago rapper in recent years entered the courtroom.
G Herbo, Dreezy and Doodie Lo were among those seen showing support, while Durk’s father, Durk Banks Sr., joined the crowd outside. Fans could also be seen holding “Free Durk” and “Free Smurk” signs and wearing shirts carrying similar messages.
MGK was also present as proceedings began. According to the Los Angeles Times, supporters and members of Durk’s family packed the courthouse, with MGK among those in attendance.
Inside the courtroom, however, the focus quickly shifted to the competing versions of what happened surrounding the August 2022 shooting that prosecutors say was intended to kill Quando Rondo, whose legal name is Tyquian Bowman.
Prosecutors allege Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, became focused on retaliation following the November 2020 killing of his close friend and OTF artist King Von, born Dayvon Bennett. The government claims Durk financed and helped orchestrate a plan to target Quando Rondo. ABC7 Los Angeles reported on the government’s allegations as opening statements began.
The alleged August 2022 attack did not kill Quando Rondo. His cousin, 24-year-old Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, was instead fatally shot near Los Angeles’ Beverly Center.
During opening statements, prosecutors characterized the case as one involving revenge, stalking and premeditated murder and told jurors that Durk used his money and position to finance the alleged operation.
Durk’s defense presented a sharply different version of events.
Attorney Marissa Goldberg argued that Durk had nothing to do with the shooting and challenged the government’s attempt to place responsibility for the alleged plot on him. The defense instead pointed toward Durk’s former personal assistant Kavon Grant as a central figure in the events surrounding the shooting.
Another major development from opening statements involves the witnesses prosecutors are expected to call.
Kavon “OTF Vonni” Grant, Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester and Keith “Flacka” Jones have pleaded guilty and are expected to testify for the government, according to reports from XXL. Their testimony could become a significant part of the prosecution’s case, while Durk’s attorneys are expected to challenge the credibility and motivations of cooperating witnesses.
The trial is also expected to put rap music itself under a microscope. The judge previously ruled that prosecutors may introduce certain music videos, lyrics and digital images as evidence, while Durk’s defense has argued that his music represents artistic expression rather than proof that he participated in the alleged crime.
Durk has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against him. If convicted on all counts in the current case, he could face life in federal prison.
With opening statements now complete, the courtroom battle moves into testimony and evidence — and with several former associates expected to take the stand, the closely watched case is only beginning.
