Nicolas Cage is bringing John Madden’s energy to the screen. A new trailer for Madden offers a longer look at Cage as the former Oakland Raiders coach whose career later made him one of football’s most familiar voices. Christian Bale plays Al Davis, the Raiders owner who worked alongside Madden during the team’s Super Bowl-winning era.
The trailer moves through several chapters of Madden’s life, including the health problems that ended his coaching career and his transition to broadcasting. It also shows his involvement with the football video game: Madden pushes back when Hawkins proposes a seven-on-seven version, underscoring his interest in representing the full game.
Madden coached the Raiders from 1969 to 1978 and led them to victory in Super Bowl XI. He went on to spend three decades as a broadcaster. In 1988, he partnered with Electronic Arts on the game that became the Madden NFL franchise.
