Chance the Rapper may be ready to shorten his name—and “Chance” is the part he’s considering removing.

During an appearance on Tea Time, the artist explained that people have encouraged him to drop “The Rapper” over the years. According to XXL, he has been thinking about taking the name in another direction.

“I’m gonna take off the ‘Chance,’” he said. “I just wanna be The Rapper.”

His explanation centered on his love of language, writing and performing. He wants the work he creates to remain rooted in hip-hop, with a name that reflects the importance of the genre in his life.

Chance also described a shift in his approach to songwriting. After sharing intimate details about his life and relationships through music, he said he now feels more interested in exploring subjects beyond his own experiences.

The discussion comes during his Coloring Book 10 Year Anniversary Tour, which celebrates the 2016 mixtape and is scheduled to conclude October 11 in Pittsburgh. For now, he continues to perform as Chance the Rapper.

Be apart of the conversation: Should Chance keep his longtime stage name or make the switch to “The Rapper”?
