Margaret’s Village was established in 1974 by Sister Margaret Traxler, SSND, a passionate social activist dedicated to peace and civil rights. Sister Margaret’s efforts for justice included marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, and she was awarded the prestigious Golda Meir Award in recognition of her advocacy. With support from a diverse group of women—ranging from lawyers and doctors to homemakers—Sister Margaret founded what was originally known as the Institute of Women Today (IWT), which was later renamed in her honor to Margaret’s Village.
