Alijah Arenas, a top high school basketball recruit and the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, has been placed in a medically induced coma following a serious car accident in Los Angeles, according to ESPN.
The crash happened early Wednesday morning around 4:55 a.m., when a Tesla Cybertruck—registered to Gilbert Arenas—veered off the road, hit a tree and a fire hydrant, and caught fire. Alijah, 18, was reportedly found outside the vehicle before emergency crews arrived. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition and later placed in a coma for medical monitoring.
Despite the intensity of the accident, sources told ESPN that Alijah didn’t suffer any broken bones, and his current condition has been described as stable.
Alijah Arenas is one of the top prospects in the nation. A standout guard at Chatsworth High School, he averaged 33 points and 8.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He later reclassified to the class of 2025 and committed to play for the University of Southern California (USC) earlier this year. He was also selected for the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game.
Following the accident, Gilbert Arenas canceled a scheduled episode of his podcast, Gil’s Arena, as the family focuses on Alijah’s recovery. Alijah’s mother, Laura Govan, shared a call for prayers on her social media, thanking the public for their support, as reported by TalkSport.
As the sports world rallies behind the Arenas family, everyone is hoping for a full recovery for Alijah—a young athlete whose future is full of promise.
