A jury granted a staggering $120 million to two individuals wrongfully convicted in Chicago. John Fulton was accompanied by his family and legal team outside the Dirksen Federal Courthouse on Monday afternoon shortly after the landmark jury decision.
Fulton and Anthony Mitchell, who was absent, each received $60 million, which their law firm claims is the largest jury verdict for wrongful conviction in U.S. history. “This is what true justice looks like. Justice has finally arrived, and there’s still much work ahead. There are many others like me who are wrongfully imprisoned in the justice system and they also need to be brought home,” Fulton remarked. The two men were just teenagers when they were apprehended for the 2003 murder of Christopher Collazo. They were sentenced to 31 years behind bars.
This occurred despite the lack of physical evidence or eyewitnesses connecting either man to the crime. The city has announced plans to contest this verdict. ABC7 contacted the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for a statement, but no response was received immediately.
