In a deeply unsettling case, 23-year-old caretaker Isaiah Fields has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the sexual assault and impregnation of a severely disabled woman at the Marklund Hyde Center in Geneva, Illinois. The 43-year-old victim, afflicted with Rett syndrome, possesses the cognitive abilities of an infant and is unable to communicate or care for herself.
The assault came to light when medical examinations for unrelated health issues revealed her advanced pregnancy. An emergency Caesarean section was performed, but the infant tragically passed away after 11 weeks in neonatal intensive care. DNA evidence confirmed Fields as the perpetrator. He pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual assault and will be required to register as a sex offender upon release.
