JUSTICE SERVED IN THE MURDER OF KRYSTAL WALTON, EX SENTENCED TO 66 YEARS

In a heartbreaking incident that underscores the devastating impact of domestic violence, 32-year-old Krystal Walton, an African American mother from Indianapolis, Indiana, was fatally shot outside a daycare center while dropping off her infant son. Her ex-boyfriend, 35-year-old Orlando Mitchell, has been sentenced to 66 years in prison for her murder.

On the morning of September 16, 2022, as Walton returned to her car after ensuring her child’s safety, Mitchell ambushed and shot her seven times around 7:30 a.m. The attack occurred in front of multiple witnesses, including young children. After fleeing the scene, Mitchell was apprehended following a police standoff during which he was shot by officers after refusing to drop his weapon. [Source]

Court records reveal that Walton had previously filed a protective order against Mitchell, expressing fear for her life. Approximately a month before the murder, Mitchell had threatened to kill both Walton and himself in a murder-suicide. His mother informed authorities that he was distressed about not being allowed to see his 1-year-old son, stating, “If he couldn’t see his son, she wasn’t gonna be in his life either.” [Source]

Following his arrest and trial, Mitchell was convicted of murder and sentenced to 66 years in prison — a sentence Walton’s family believes is necessary but not sufficient to heal their loss. Her father, Christopher Walton, remarked, “She didn’t stand a chance… This creepy predator violently and viciously attacked her.” [Source]

Mitchell’s legal troubles are not over. He is also facing separate murder charges for the 2023 death of Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy John Durm during an escape attempt from the Marion County jail. Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty in that case. [Source]
