SALT-N-PEPA SUE UNIVERSAL OVER MASTER RIGHTS

Salt-N-Pepa are pushing back—in court.

The legendary hip-hop duo has filed a federal lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), claiming the label is illegally holding onto their master recordings. Hits like “Push It” and “Shoop” are at the center of the battle, as the artists argue they should have regained ownership under the Copyright Act of 1976.

According to the suit, Salt-N-Pepa tried to terminate their decades-old contract in 2022, but UMG refused, arguing that the music was created as “work for hire.” The group disagrees—and they’re not just asking for their rights back. They’re also seeking over $1 million in damages and a permanent injunction that would officially name them as the rightful owners of their music.

So here’s the question: If you create it, do you automatically own it forever—or does the fine print win in the end?
