3-YEAR-OLD BOY DIES AFTER BEING LEFT IN HOT CAR BY DEPT. OF HUMAN RESOURCES CONTRACT WORKER

A tragic incident in Birmingham, Alabama has left the community heartbroken after 3-year-old Keterrius “KJ” Sparks died from heat exposure on July 22, 2025.

Authorities say KJ, who was in state custody, was left inside a hot car for nearly five hours by a contract worker with Covenant Services, a private agency partnered with the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR).

He was found unresponsive around 5:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. The caregiver has since been terminated, and a full investigation is underway.

DHR released a statement calling the loss “devastating” and confirmed they’re cooperating with law enforcement.
