A late-night walk turned deadly for two teenagers in Chicago’s West Lawn neighborhood, where police say members of their own group opened fire, leaving one dead and another wounded.
The shooting happened just before midnight on Wednesday, July 23, in the 7200 block of South Avers Avenue. According to police, five individuals were walking together when three of them suddenly pulled out guns and started shooting.
An 18-year-old was shot in the head and rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. A 16-year-old also suffered a graze wound to the face but is expected to recover.
Officers quickly arrested three suspects — two males and one female — and recovered two firearms at the scene. Charges are expected as the investigation continues.
The West Lawn neighborhood, located on Chicago’s Southwest Side, has seen increasing concerns over youth violence and crime. This tragic incident only adds to the growing call for intervention, outreach programs, and stronger community support for young people.
Area One detectives are leading the investigation. The names of the victims and suspects have not yet been released.
