Following the announcement that Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire trial has been delayed until August, high-profile attorney has filed paperwork seeking to join the Chicago rapper’s legal team.
According to court documents reviewed by Complex, Steel requested to replace attorney Jonathan M. Brayman as part of Durk’s defense. Complex has reached out to Steel for comment, and the report may be update as more information becomes available.
Steel became widely known in the hip-hop community for representing Young Thug during his lengthy racketeering trial in Atlanta. His efforts ultimately helped secure the rapper’s release after more than two and a half years behind bars. Throughout the case, Steel demonstrated strong dedication to his client, even spending time in jail after refusing an order from Fulton County Chief Judge Ural D. Glanville to reveal confidential sources. The judge was later replaced by Paige Whitaker during the proceedings.
Steel’s work on the case earned him major respect within hip-hop circles. Artists like Drake and PartyNextDoor even paid tribute to him by naming a track after the attorney on their joint project $ome $exy $ongs 4 U. After the trial concluded, Steel praised Young Thug, calling him a “hero” for exposing what he described as flaws within the criminal justice system.
During a recent appearance on Killer Mike’s Conversate podcast, the rapper and activist mentioned the federal government’s reported “94–95 percent” conviction rate. Steel responded confidently, saying, “Not with us.” His track record and reputation help explain why Durk would want him involved in the case.
Durk’s federal murder-for-hire trial was postponed after a judge denied requests from several co-defendants to be tried separately. U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald ruled the defendants will be tried together, with jury selection now scheduled to begin on August 20, 2026. Prosecutors argue the defendants were all part of the same alleged murder-for-hire conspiracy.
Durk, who has denied the allegations, has been behind bars since his arrest in October 2024. Federal authorities claim the case is tied to an alleged plot targeting rapper, whose cousin was fatally shot in 2022. The trial had originally been expected to begin earlier this year.
Do you all think this makes Lil Durk chance at freedom much greater than it recently was ?
