Residents on Chicago’s Northwest Side woke up to shattered windows and damaged vehicles after thieves broke into multiple cars overnight to steal airbags, according to WGN News.
Police say the burglaries happened early Wednesday morning (March 25) along the 5400 block of North Neenah Avenue and nearby streets. Officers responding to the scene discovered several vehicles with smashed windows and missing airbags.
Authorities later found similar damage on the 5300 block of North Nashville Avenue, with reports indicating the thefts stretched across several nearby blocks. In total, close to two dozen vehicles were targeted during the overnight spree.
Investigators say three suspects were seen fleeing in a vehicle after the crimes. Detectives are now reviewing surveillance footage and asking residents to check security cameras that may have captured the suspects.
Police believe the thefts are part of a growing trend across Chicago where criminals target late-model Honda vehicles, especially Civics and Accords. The airbags are often stolen quickly and resold on the black market, while victims can face repair costs exceeding $1,000.
