A racist act of vandalism at a Hyde Park theater has prompted a hate crime investigation and renewed concerns about targeted threats against Black-led cultural spaces in Chicago.
The incident occurred on March 13, 2026, at Definition Theatre, a company known for centering Black voices and led by Black women. According to CBS Chicago, an individual defaced the theater’s front window with a message explicitly threatening Black women. The graffiti was discovered during the closing stretch of a production created by and for Black women, amplifying the impact on artists and audiences involved.
The Chicago Police Department has opened a hate crime investigation, citing the violent and discriminatory nature of the message. Officers have increased patrols in the Hyde Park area while detectives work to identify a suspect. No arrests have been announced so far.
Community leaders and advocacy organizations quickly condemned the act. The Council on American-Islamic Relations called the vandalism “deeply disturbing” and urged authorities to pursue the case aggressively. Supporters of the theater have also rallied online and in person, emphasizing the importance of protecting spaces that amplify marginalized voices.
Despite the incident, Definition Theatre says it remains committed to its mission. In a public response, the organization reaffirmed its focus on storytelling that uplifts Black communities and creates opportunities for underrepresented artists.
The investigation is ongoing.
