According to NBC Chicago, a new citywide initiative is bringing together Hearts with Soles and the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to address sneaker-related bullying while supporting youth in need across Chicago.
The sneaker drive encourages residents to donate gently used or new athletic shoes, which will be redistributed to students and families experiencing footwear insecurity. Collection bins can be found in all 22 police districts, at the police academies, and at CPD headquarters, making participation accessible across the city.
The initiative was launched by Derrick Robinson, CEO and founder of Hearts with Soles. Robinson started the organization in 2023 after experiencing bullying himself, an experience that inspired him to take action against footwear insecurity and the social pressure many young people face because of what they wear. His mission focuses on restoring confidence and dignity to students impacted by economic hardship.
“This is about more than sneakers—it’s about making sure no child feels left out or targeted because of their shoes,” Robinson said in connection with the campaign.
The collection drive runs through August 1, after which all donated sneakers will be cleaned, sorted, and distributed to individuals and families in need throughout Chicago communities. Organizers say the effort helps not only meet a basic need but also reduce bullying tied to appearance and financial disparities.
In addition, sneakers that are not suitable for donation will not go to waste. They will be recycled through GotSneakersUSA, ensuring materials are responsibly repurposed instead of ending up in landfills.
Community leaders and CPD officials are encouraging residents to participate, noting that even one pair of shoes can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life.
By combining community outreach, public safety support, and sustainable recycling efforts, Hearts with Soles and the Chicago Police Department hope to build a safer, more inclusive environment for students across the city—one pair of sneakers at a time.
