Families across Chicago are demanding answers after several parents accused local prom dress designer Makeda Evans of allegedly taking thousands of dollars for custom prom gowns that were never delivered before prom weekend.

According to multiple reports shared online, frustrated parents and students say they paid large deposits — and in some cases full payments — for custom dresses through Evans’ business, Makeda Designs. Some families claim they spent anywhere from hundreds to several thousand dollars only to be left without dresses days before prom.

The controversy quickly gained attention on social media after videos surfaced showing emotional confrontations between upset parents and the designer. In several clips, families can be seen expressing frustration and disappointment after allegedly being unable to reach Evans or receive updates about their orders.

Parents say many students were forced to scramble at the last minute to find replacement dresses, while others missed out on wearing the gowns they had been planning for months. Some families also claimed alterations and fittings were repeatedly delayed before communication allegedly stopped altogether.

Evans has reportedly addressed the backlash online, saying she has been dealing with personal and mental health struggles. She also stated that she plans to seek treatment and work toward resolving customer concerns.

As frustrations grew, people around started to damage Evans store which led police to come back.

This is not the first time complaints have surfaced involving Makeda Designs. Similar allegations were made during the 2023 prom season, when some customers also reported delayed or missing dresses.

The situation has sparked major debate online, with many people expressing sympathy for the students impacted, while others are calling for legal action and refunds for affected families.
