Former NBA guard and Chicago native Patrick Beverley is facing serious accusations after reports surfaced claiming he choked and punched his 15-year-old baby sister during an argument. According to Black News, Beverley was arrested and charged after police responded to a dispute between him and the teen.
According to the New York Post, authorities say the situation began when the teen returned home and was confronted by both her mother and Beverley. In an affidavit filed Friday, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Deputy Miguel Ramirez , she alleged that Beverley grabbed her by the neck with both hands, lifting her off the ground for roughly 20 to 30 seconds. She claimed she felt pain and struggled to breathe, describing the moment as terrifying and saying she believed she was losing oxygen. Court records also state that Beverley carried her by the neck into another room before punching her once in the left eye.
The alleged victim told Ramirez that “Patrick Beverley made a statement to her during the assault, to the extent that he will be the family relative to kill her,” the affidavit states.
“I understand that the affidavit contains some negative details; however, remember that it is only one side of the story – given at a time when emotions were high. As I’ve said before, we don’t believe that the description in that affidavit is accurate, nor is it complete. Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night,” Beverley’s attorney Letitia Quinones-Hollins said in a statement.
“In fact, he was very respectful with the authorities that night and encouraged others to do the same. He is the provider and protector of his family, including his little sister and his mom. He has always looked out for their wellbeing and will continue to do so. I have every expectation that when all the facts are in, Patrick will be cleared of these charges. Until then, I can only ask that everyone keep an open mind and not rush to judgment. Please remember this is America and in our society, Patrick is innocent unless proven otherwise in a court of law.”
Beverly and his team isn stressing that charges only tell one part of the story, and that emotions were high, context is missing, and online speculation has already blown things out of proportion.
