  • Chicago reported zero homicides over Memorial Day weekend for the first time in at least a decade, according to police and local reports.
  • Last year, Chicago recorded four homicides during the same holiday weekend.
  • CPD data cited by NBC Chicago shows murders are down 19% compared to 2024 and down 30% compared to 2023.
  • Shooting incidents are also down 31% from 2024 and 38% from 2023.
  • Despite the milestone, 36 people were injured in 23 separate shootings across the city.
  • Officials also confirmed two people later died from gunshot wounds suffered over the weekend.

Chicago saw a historic Memorial Day weekend after police reported zero homicides during the holiday period — the first time that has happened in at least a decade, according to NBC Chicago and FOX 32 Chicago.

The milestone comes as Chicago continues seeing a larger decline in violence compared to recent years. NBC Chicago reported that murders are down 19% from 2024 and down 30% from 2023, while shooting incidents are down 31% from 2024 and 38% from 2023.

Still, city officials made it clear the work is far from over. Across Chicago, 36 people were injured in 23 separate shooting incidents from Friday evening through Monday night, according to NBC Chicago. FOX 32 reported CPD’s early count listed 23 shootings with 26 victims during the same holiday window.

It is also important to note that while police reported zero homicides during the official Memorial Day weekend timeframe, NBC Chicago reported that two people later died from gunshot wounds they suffered over the weekend, including a 32-year-old man in East Garfield Park and a 2-year-old child in Roseland.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city is encouraged by the low number of fatal shootings and zero homicides, but added that “the work ahead is plentiful” and any act of violence is unacceptable.
