During Black History Month, we’re highlighting some pioneering entrepreneurs who are overcoming obstacles and achieving success in the craft beer sector. Currently, they are focused on establishing their first taproom in Chicago.
Funkytown Brewery aims to make its craft beer accessible to a wider audience, but first, they require a dedicated taproom. The owners emphasize that their mission extends beyond brewing beer; it focuses on fostering community, celebrating culture, and ensuring accessibility. Operating within the vibrant incubator Pilot Project Brewing, Funkytown Brewery is flourishing.
Since entering the market in October 2021, they have experienced significant growth. Their products can be found at venues such as The United Center, Soldier Field, Guaranteed Rate, Wrigley Field, as well as supermarkets like Whole Foods, Jewel, Binny’s, and Mariano’s. They have also expanded their reach into Wisconsin and northern Indiana.
Currently, Funkytown distributes its beer to select bars and grocery stores. Now, they are working towards launching a taproom close to the United Center, contributing to the revitalization efforts on the West Side.
The brewery is three months into a fundraising initiative, looking for investors and support from the community to help realize their vision. However, they are facing challenges. As first-time entrepreneurs, they started with just $3,500 in their business account.
Research indicates that Black entrepreneurs encounter greater difficulties in securing funding. According to a report from the Federal Reserve, Black business owners are more frequently turned down for loans and receive lesser amounts of funding than their white counterparts.
The owners of the brewery believe their mission transcends business; it is also about dismantling barriers. They have confidence in their product, and the data underscores their success. Funkytown Brewery is aiming to gather $5 million to purchase a new building on the West Side. From there, they plan to renovate it and expand their workforce.
