A heartbreaking fire on Chicago’s South Side has left four people dead, including two children, as investigators work to determine whether the blaze was intentionally set.
According to NBC Chicago, the fire broke out early Wednesday morning in the West Englewood neighborhood near 62nd and Paulina. According to officials, flames quickly spread through the home while several people were still inside. Firefighters rushed to the scene and pulled multiple victims from the burning house as neighbors desperately tried to help rescue those trapped inside.
Authorities said two adults and four children were transported to local hospitals following the fire. Tragically, an 8-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy later died from their injuries. A 57-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man also suffered severe burns and were pronounced dead shortly afterward. Two teenage boys survived and remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Family members identified the victims as Lisa Brown, Reginald Wilson, 8-year-old Royalty Rattler, and 15-year-old Ja’Quan Rattler. Relatives described Brown as a caring foster parent who opened her home to children in need for years.
Neighbors said the scene was chaotic as thick smoke and flames filled the block before sunrise. Some residents reportedly helped children escape through windows while waiting for firefighters to arrive. Witnesses described hearing screams and watching families run outside in panic as the fire intensified.
Chicago police and fire officials are now investigating the possibility of arson. Investigators believe the fire may have started outside the home, though authorities have not announced any suspects or arrests. Community leaders are asking nearby residents to review home surveillance footage for anything suspicious that may have happened before the fire began.
The tragedy has shaken the West Englewood community, with many mourning the loss of a family remembered for caring deeply about children and helping others.
