A horrific domestic-related attack in Chicago has left a 6-month-old baby girl dead and a community shaken, after police say a known offender stabbed the infant inside a South Side home Friday morning.
According to NBC Chicago, the violent incident unfolded around 7:20 a.m. in the 3000 block of West 59th Street in the Gage Park neighborhood. Officers responding to the scene discovered that the baby had suffered a stab wound to the chest inside the residence.
Emergency responders rushed the infant to Comer Children’s Hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators say the suspect attempted to flee the scene in a disturbing and chaotic escape, jumping from an upper-level window of the home. The suspect was later transported to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the fall and was taken into police custody once stabilized.
Authorities recovered a knife at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect or clarified the relationship to the child, though they confirmed the case is being treated as domestic in nature.
Detectives from Chicago Police Area One are actively working to determine what led to the deadly attack. Charges are expected as the investigation continues.
The tragedy has added to growing concerns over domestic violence incidents in the city, particularly those involving children, as neighbors and community members grapple with the shocking nature of the crime.
Police have not released further details at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
