A south suburban community is mourning the loss of former basketball player Khapri Alston after he was shot and killed Thursday night in Dolton, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
According to reports, the 31-year-old father of two was leaving a cigar lounge near East 115th Street and South Martin Luther King Drive when an altercation reportedly escalated into gunfire. Family members say Alston had been at Rucker Cigar Lounge with his girlfriend when an argument or confrontation broke out before shots were fired.
Loved ones gathered outside the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as they demanded answers and justice in the case. Alston’s family described him as a talented athlete, devoted father, and someone who was deeply loved by friends, family, and the basketball community. They say he built a successful basketball career overseas and remained dedicated to mentoring others through sports.
Family members also raised concerns about the investigation, claiming the suspected shooter may have political and business connections. They are now urging authorities to conduct a full and unbiased investigation into Khapri Alston’s death.
Dolton police confirmed that one person is currently in custody, though no charges had been announced as of Friday. Authorities have not yet released additional information about what led to the shooting or whether more arrests are expected.
As news of Alston’s death spreads, tributes continue pouring in across social media from friends, former teammates, and community members remembering his life both on and off the court. His family says they are focused on honoring his legacy while seeking accountability for the tragic shooting.
