Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is speaking out after a chaotic teen gathering downtown left five Chicago police officers injured and led to more than a dozen arrests over the weekend.
According to NBC Chicago, large crowds gathered in downtown Chicago late at night when disturbances broke out after curfew hours. Police say fights, reckless behavior, and confrontations with officers created a dangerous scene that required a major police response.
Authorities said an 18-year-old driver was taken into custody after allegedly being involved in part of the chaos. Officials confirmed the driver was not injured. In total, 12 other people were also arrested in connection with the events.
Five Chicago police officers suffered injuries while responding to the unrest. Officials said the injured officers are in fair condition and expected to recover.
In a statement posted to social media, Mayor Johnson addressed the incident and thanked officers for their response.
“Unauthorized large gatherings can quickly become dangerous, and early this morning, after curfew hours, we saw that firsthand,” the mayor said. “I am grateful to the officers who responded diligently to help keep people safe and relieved that the officers who were injured are in fair condition.”
Videos shared online appeared to show large crowds flooding downtown streets as police worked to restore order. The incident has once again raised concerns about teen gatherings in Chicago and the growing challenges city leaders face during summer weekends and major public events.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing surveillance footage and social media videos tied to the disturbances. Additional charges or arrests could follow.
