An Indiana State Police trooper is recovering after being shot during a deadly exchange of gunfire following a traffic stop on Interstate 80/94 near the Indiana-Illinois state line early Tuesday morning, according to CBS Chicago.
The incident happened shortly after midnight near Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond. Officials said the trooper initially pulled over a gray Hyundai Elantra for what was described as a minor traffic violation. During the stop, investigators say the trooper became concerned about the occupants inside the vehicle and requested emergency backup from nearby law enforcement agencies.
Authorities said the trooper reportedly held the vehicle’s two occupants at gunpoint while waiting for assistance from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and Hammond Police Department. As officers approached the vehicle, police say the driver suddenly pulled out a handgun, triggering a shootout involving multiple officers.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Aaron Barnes of Gary, Indiana, was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said the trooper suffered a gunshot wound to the chest during the exchange and was rushed to a nearby hospital before later being transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center for surgery.
Indiana State Police said the trooper is currently listed in stable condition and is expected to survive. Authorities also confirmed the trooper’s K-9, which was inside the patrol vehicle during the incident, was not injured.
A female passenger inside the suspect vehicle was taken into custody for questioning while investigators determine whether any charges will be filed in connection to the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing as Indiana State Police continue reviewing evidence from the scene. The shooting led to major traffic delays and lane closures along I-80/94 Tuesday morning while officers processed the area.
