AFRICAN/CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL OF LIFE DENIED CHICAGO PERMIT AGAIN

For more than 30 years, the African/Caribbean Festival of Life has celebrated the music, food, culture, and traditions of African countries and Caribbean nations in Chicago. But for the second year in a row, organizers say the city denied their permit at the last minute, leaving many frustrated and questioning the future of the long-running event.

Last year, the festival’s permit to operate in the South Loop was denied due to concerns about crowd size and traffic. Organizers were forced to quickly relocate the event to Washington Park in order to keep the celebration alive.

Now, festival organizer Ephraim Martin says history has repeated itself. Just weeks before this year’s planned July Fourth weekend event in Union Park, organizers learned their permit request had once again been denied. Martin said they were hoping for last-minute support from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to help approve the permit, but never received a response from his office.

Rather than cancel the festival entirely, organizers have decided to combine the Festival of Life with another popular event they host — the Jerk Seafood and Vegan Festival — which is already scheduled for September in Union Park and has secured city approval.

“We have no choice now but to combine both events and to have a grand celebration,” Martin said.

Organizers say the repeated permit denials have placed a major financial and emotional strain on everyone involved, including vendors, performers, and local businesses that depend on the festival each year. Supporters also argue the event represents an important cultural tradition for Chicago’s African and Caribbean communities.

After this year’s combined event, organizers say they will evaluate whether the Festival of Life should continue in Chicago or potentially move to another city in the future — a possibility that has sparked concern among longtime attendees who view the festival as a staple of Chicago’s summer culture.
