Hundreds of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Safe Passage workers were recently honored at New Life Covenant Church in Humboldt Park for their dedication to keeping students safe as they travel to and from school each day, according to CBS Chicago.
The event highlighted the growth and impact of the Safe Passage program, which launched in 2009 serving just 35 schools. Today, the initiative operates at 192 schools across Chicago and supports nearly 80,000 students citywide, making it one of the city’s most significant school safety efforts.
During the celebration, 17 Safe Passage workers representing 17 different neighborhoods were recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty. Organizers praised the honorees for their commitment to students, neighborhoods, and school communities, noting that their efforts extend far beyond simply monitoring designated routes.
Safe Passage workers serve as a visible presence near schools and along student travel paths, helping deter crime, de-escalate conflicts, and provide assistance when needed. For many students and parents, they are trusted figures who offer encouragement, guidance, and a sense of security each school day.
Speakers at the event emphasized the critical role Safe Passage workers play in creating safer communities and supporting educational success. Their daily presence helps ensure students can get to and from school safely while building positive relationships with young people and families.
Officials also highlighted the program’s remarkable growth over the past 17 years, crediting Safe Passage workers for helping strengthen connections between schools and neighborhoods throughout Chicago.
While thousands of workers contribute to the program’s success, the recognition of 17 individuals served as a reminder of the extraordinary impact one person can have on a community. Their dedication, leadership, and willingness to go the extra mile continue to make a difference in the lives of countless Chicago students.
As the Safe Passage program continues to expand, its mission remains the same: ensuring every student has a safe path to education and a stronger future.
