A shooting at a BP gas station on Chicago’s South Side left two people dead and two others critically injured Wednesday, prompting a large police response and an ongoing investigation, according to CBS Chicago.
According to the Chicago police, some officers responded to the BP gas station near 76th Street and Halsted Street after reports of multiple people being shot. When officers arrived, they found four victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police said that a 53-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. Authorities have not publicly identified either victim as they continue to notify their families.
Two additional victims survived the shooting but remain hospitalized. A 35-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. A 33-year-old man was also transported to the same hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Investigators have not released information about what led to the shooting or whether the victims were specifically targeted. Detectives spent hours at the scene gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing surveillance cameras from the gas station and surrounding businesses.
The shooting temporarily shut down activity at the busy intersection as crime scene investigators marked evidence and searched for clues. As of Thursday morning, no arrests had been announced, and police have not released a description of any suspect.
The fatal shooting adds to a series of violent incidents that have occurred across Chicago in recent weeks, once again raising concerns about gun violence in neighborhoods across the city.
The investigation remains active, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Chicago Police Department or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. Authorities say that additional details will be released as the investigation progresses.
