Two Chicago police officers were shot Friday evening during what authorities say began as a traffic stop in the city’s South Shore neighborhood, according to CBS Chicago.
The shooting happened shortly after 5 p.m. near East 79th Street and South Clyde Avenue, prompting a large emergency response. According to multiple reports, the officers—both assigned to the Chicago Police Department’s Fourth District tactical unit—were struck by gunfire while conducting the stop.
Officials said one officer was shot in the arm while the other was hit in a protective vest. Both officers were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover.
Authorities also confirmed that a civilian was injured during the incident and taken to a nearby hospital. The extent of that person’s injuries has not yet been released.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) announced it is investigating an officer-involved shooting in the 2000 block of East 79th Street, though officials have not yet released additional details about what led to the exchange of gunfire.
