SONYA MASSEY’S FAMILY REACHES SETTLEMENT AFTER FATAL POLICE SHOOTING

Closure was finally achieved for Sonya Massey’s family on Friday.

The family has reached a settlement of $10 million with Sangamon County concerning her tragic death, as noted in a memo to the county board.

In the memo, Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter said no taxes will be raised, no additional debt will be taken on, and no county services will be cut due to the settlement.

“No price paid can take back the actions of a rogue former deputy, but this agreement is an effort to provide some measure of recompense to the Massey family for their unimaginable loss,” Van Meter said. “The county remains committed to working with the community to strengthen policies to try to ensure tragedies like this never happen again.”

Massey was fatally shot at her home near Springfield last July by former Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson, who is currently in jail awaiting trial on murder charges.

Sonya Massey was facing a mental health crisis when she was shot in the head and killed by Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson in her own home in the early morning hours of July 6th 2024 after she’d called 911 to report a suspected prowler.

The county board is expected to give final approval to the settlement next week.
