Theives stole at least one vehicle from the parking lot of the Chicago Police Department headquarters in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 20.
According to surveillance footage and police sources, the suspects jumped the security gate at CPD’s main facility on South Michigan Avenue around 7:19 a.m., broke into a black Jeep SUV, and then rammed through the gate to escape. One of the stolen vehicles reportedly belonged to a retired police officer.
Adding to the shock, another vehicle—a Genesis SUV—was also taken but not too sure if it was from the same lot. That car was later spotted by officers just blocks away, near Pershing and King Drive. Police are now reviewing surveillance footage and conducting a full investigation.
This incident raises serious questions about security protocols at one of the city’s most secure and high-profile law enforcement sites. If thieves can pull off a daylight heist inside a CPD parking lot, what does that mean for the safety of ordinary residents?
At this time, no arrests have been announced, but authorities are urging anyone with information or nearby video footage to come forward. The stolen Jeep and Genesis may have already been used in other crimes—or may yet be recovered.
