Three brothers, ages 6, 8, and 9, tragically died after falling through a frozen pond north of Bonham, Texas, during a severe winter storm on Monday, January 26.
Authorities say the youngest brother fell through thin ice first, and his older siblings jumped in to help. Their mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, bravely entered the freezing water trying to save them but could not reach them in time. Neighbors and first responders pulled the boys from the pond, but all three were pronounced dead.
“They were just screaming, telling me to help them,” Hangaman said. “It was only me… and I couldn’t help them all by myself.”
The tragedy has shaken the Bonham community, with the local school district providing counseling to students and staff. Officials are warning the public about the dangers of thin ice and frozen water during extreme cold weather.
The loss of these young lives is a heartbreaking reminder of both the power of nature and the courage of family in moments of crisis.
