FAMU LAW STUDENT SAYS WORD “BLACK” WAS BANNED FROM THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH FLYERS

A Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law student, Aaliyah Steward, says she was told to remove the word “Black” from flyers promoting a Black History Month event.

Steward says the request came during the approval process for student organization materials, where she was allegedly informed that certain words — including “Black,” “affirmative action,” and “women” — could not be used on publicly distributed flyers and would need to be altered or abbreviated.

The situation has sparked backlash, particularly because FAMU is a historically Black college and the event was meant to celebrate Black history and culture.

According to Click Orlando, University officials cited compliance with Florida’s anti-DEI laws, including Senate Bill 266, which restricts the use of state and federal funds for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion-related programming at public universities.

Steward has since resubmitted the flyer and is awaiting approval.
