The City of Chicago has approved Mayor Brandon Johnson’s request for additional funds worth $70 million to provide housing, food, and other essential services to thousands of asylum seekers. The city council passed the resolution on Friday to support the city’s efforts to tackle the migrant crisis.
The 30-18 vote came after more than an hour of at times heated debate.
The council unanimously approved $48 million in state and federal grant money. Much of the funding will be allocated towards paying off the city’s debt for staffing and shelter expenses.
