Beachgoers at La Jolla Cove in San Diego had to end their beach day early after sea lions approached the shore and began charging at them.
The sea lions didn’t attack for no reason; sometimes people would attempt to pet their young, provoking the adults into full attack mode.
La Jolla Cove has a history of sea lions and their pups coming onto one particular part of the beach. Some citizens have complained to the City of San Diego and demanded that they block off the stairs that lead to the area where the sea lions come ashore, but nothing has changed, causing regular conflicts between the animals and visitors.
Activists argue that closing the staircase would help protect both the sea lions and the people.
While no one was reported injured, residents of the city still worry that one day a beachgoer won’t be as fortunate.
